Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Recently I got an allergy profile. It reports an allergy to onion and kidney beans (rajma). So I stopped eating kidney beans. I am finding it difficult to quit onion. The onion profile value is 0.69. What should I do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From your allergy report (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it is obvious that you are allergic to onion. The value of 0.69 suggests mild allergy. Still, you can not guarantee that after exposure, a severe reaction can not occur. A positive allergy test indicates sensitization to an allergen but does not necessarily predict that a clinically relevant allergic reaction will occur. The best way to treat allergy is to avoid the trigger, but it is very difficult, especially in Indian recipes.

First, find out if cooked onion causes less symptoms than the raw one because the allergic trigger is protein present in raw onion. So after cooking, it gets denatured and can not cause allergic symptoms. Over counter tablets like Levocetirizine, Desloratadine, or Rupatadine will alleviate allergic symptoms like itching and redness. Antacids will help to relieve acidity, specially liquid antacids than tablets.

So prevention is the key messege. Even if it is said that food does not contain onion, the flavouring agents, sauces or many toppings contain it and cause an allergic reaction. Even other food from the same family can sometimes cause allergy like garlic, carrot, etc. It is the matter of just trial and error as per your tolerance.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
