Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend is too thin and weak. She had TB when she was young. Her blood group is O and Rh positive. Please advise something to help her gain weight.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I have gone through your case thoroughly and can well understand your genuine concerns. I want to assure you that you do not have to worry as everything is going to be fine soon.

The Probable causes

I hope she has no tuberculosis right now. Kindly get her checked for dormant TB too. Regarding maintaining a normal body weight: If she can eat and drink and has no major disease process going on in her body, then I never recommend supplements and medications for the purpose of weight gain or keeping weight within normal limits. Diet Suggestions for her: 1. Taking plenty of water, fresh fruit juices made at home, salads and healthy diet. A healthy diet should include a good proportion of proteins like fish, eggs, meat, nuts, beans and wholegrain foods. 2. Say no to alcohol and cigarettes. 3. Avoid excessive tea, coffee, chocolates etc and other caffeinated drinks. 4. Avoid beverages of any kind including energy drinks. 5. Take zinc containing foods like oyster, chicken, nuts and beans, red meat, vegetables and salads and whole grain foods. You need zinc for normal hormone levels too and for good health. 6. Avoid fast food, refined meats, fried foods. Say no to extra sugars and salts.

Preventive measures

Physical Activity: 1. Without regular physical activity, she cannot get in shape and cannot maintain her body weight in limits. 2. Ask her physician for the ideal body weight goals and body mass index. I need her age, weight, height, waist circumference if you need any guidance from me in this regard. 3. Jogging, yoga, meditation, cardio exercises and aerobics are all good activities for her healthy heart and body.
