Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 53-year-old female. My height and weight are 5'10 feet and 215 lbs, respectively. I had a slight nauseating feeling, a loose stomach, lots of diarrhea, and gas releasing from both ends. I felt that the gas had moved up into my upper rib cage and caused cramping. The pain has become unbearable even after using the bathroom, farting, and belching. The pain started spreading through the whole rib cage and back between the shoulders. It was excruciating pain that lasted more than three hours. I could not find any comfort even after lying down. When I laid down on my back and put my arms above my head, the pain moved into my armpits. At one point in time, I was in the bathroom with diarrhea and puking in the garbage can because of pain.

Finally, the pain subsided a little. However, it has been almost two full days now, and I still have slight pain in my rib cage. I felt like I was a punching bag. This is the second time I have had the issue. I had a similar episode a month ago, but not this worse. I wanted to know what was happening, whether I had a gas or back pain due to a pinched nerve.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First, I suggest you get physically examined and investigate to rule out any medical conditions and treat them accordingly.

And I want to know a few more things,

  1. Had it happened earlier, or this is the first time?
  2. Are you an alcoholic?
  3. Do you smoke?
  4. Are you taking any medicines currently?
  5. Do you take any medicine for blood pressure, sugar, thyroid, heart, or cholesterol?
  6. Did you eat any non-vegetarian or outside food in the last few days?
  7. Any history of recent travel?

I would suggest you to take plenty of fluids, go for a walk, do diet modification, do yoga, and exercise as health permits. It will gradually help.

It is advisable to avoid straining to clear throat, avoid milk, tea, coffee, smoking, alcohol, non-vegetarian, and fried oily junk foods for a few days. Taking light, easily digestible home-cooked food with some antacid is better. Also, you can have ORS (oral rehydration solution) unless otherwise contraindicated. Keep yourself well hydrated.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
