What are the chances of a child with a diabetic father and a non-diabetic mother acquiring diabetes?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Can a girl with no family history of diabetes marry a boy having a family history of type 1 diabetes? What will be the effect on babies? Are there any repercussions? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern. A child with parents who have diabetes will not always have diabetes. However, theoretically, if the father has type 1 diabetes, the chances of a child being born with the same condition are around 8 %, which is a very small percentage. Moreover, the management of diabetes has been made easier these days. When it comes to marriage, in my opinion, if the boy and the girl have complementary characters concerning how they live their lives, that is what matters. There are many examples of perfectly healthy people marrying each other but not living happy or fulfilling lives. So I guess if the boy and his family take care of their health condition responsibly, there is no need to worry. I hope that answers your question. Kindly follow up if you have any doubts.
