Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am asking a general question about HPV (human papillomavirus) and genital warts. My boyfriend has a mole or wart-looking growth on the shaft of his penis for two years. It is the third one to appear in the last year. He swears he had not cheated before we got together, and he was tested. Due to an abnormal Pap smear, it came negative (for HPV). Is it possible for him to have had it this whole time with flare-ups occurring so far apart? And to continue to show up this far along. From what I have read, most cases resolve on their own within two years. The information I have found on HPV is very confusing and seems to say it is both possible and not possible for him to have had it this long.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your confusion is understandable. Appreciate that there are many strains of HPV (human papilloma virus). You should know about two strains, one strain which causes warts on mucus membranes like penis, vagina, rectum, throat, lips, etc., based on sexual habits. The virus is transmitted generally by unprotected sex. This strain is relatively benign. Another strain that can cause cervical cancer in women. This strain is pathogenic. You have to understand that males or females without any symptoms of HPV can transmit the virus unknowingly. So you cannot blame your partner. The only way to know about HPV infection in women is regular Pap smear (Cervical smear) examination. HPV immunization is very helpful. You can consult for further information or help. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
