Can trapped gas in the throat put pressure on the back of the neck and ear, resulting in vertigo?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

1. I have trapped gas in my throat. Whenever I eat and drink, I burp every time. 2. I can sometimes feel the gas in my throat, which puts pressure on the back of my neck. 3. The gas also seems to push against my eustachian tubes, and I get vertigo. I think it is a mixture of gas and acid, but I can feel the gas in my throat, and I know the vertigo is coming. Once I burp and relieve the gas, the symptoms go away. My GP said I have Gerd that is irritating my eustachian tubes and prescribed me Esomeprazole and Simeticona. These symptoms come and go but seem more apparent when I fast. I am trying to lose weight. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your general physician might be right. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), irritable bowel, or nervous dyspepsia can cause these symptoms. One important cause is aerophagia, which means swallowing excessive air, which can cause bloating, belching, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort. Do you eat or talk fast? Consuming excessive amounts of cigarettes, liquor, or carbonated beverages can also cause this. Other causes can be excessive weight causing nocturnal apnea with mouth breathing and hence aerophagia. Do you have any of these? Thank you.
