Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I think I have gonorrhea. How do I treat it? I might have contracted it from a male after having sexual intercourse. I get a burning sensation when I pee and there is a pus discharge on my underwear. I am taking a tablet of Amoxicillin 500 mg and it is not been prescribed. I have been taking it for five days now. Is it the right medication for me?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

For diagnosis of gonorrhea, you need to undergo a clinical microbiology investigation. The pus must be subjected to a gram stain examination for diagnosis. Pus discharge happens in many infective etiology, so we need to do a clinical microbiological investigation to arrive at the diagnosis. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of Gonorrhea responds well to antibiotics such as Azithromycin along with Cefixime. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) tests do not turn out to be positive within a few days of exposure, it takes three months time (window period) for antibody production and valid test. Do visit a general practitioner nearby.

Take care.
