Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing extreme hair fall due to an itchy and hairy scalp for the past 45 days. Dandruff flakes keep on coming within a day or two after shampooing my hair.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Hair fall is a natural phenomenon. Losing up to 100 hairs per day is normal. Old hair has to fall because hair is one of the fastest-growing cells in our body. Hair fall becomes concerning, when it crosses 100 hairs per day. When there is hair loss at a localized area over the scalp. When there is a visible scalp because of less dense hair over the scalp. There are many causes of hair loss. Telogen effluvium- stress-induced. Androgenetic alopecia- genetic and hormonal. Thyroid problems- hypothyroidism. Alopecia areata- small bald patch on scalp, beard. Please attach your clinical picture along with your query so that it is convenient for me to comment on your condition and give you appropriate suggestions. Dandruff does not cause hair loss. Dandruff is because of excessive oil production from the sebaceous glands of the scalp. Dandruff can be itchy when there is added inflammation. We call that condition as seborrheic dermatitis. I would suggest you use the following. Silesia KT shampoo (a combination of ketoconazole and salicylic acid) use this shampoo on alternative days. The rest of the days, use head and shoulders shampoo. Washing the scalp every day is very important to take off extra oil. And please do not use oil (coconut) for the scalp. It would do more harm than help when you have dandruff. We already have sufficient oil over the scalp from sebaceous glands. Hair nutrient tablet- containing Biotin, Zinc, Calcium, and Pantothenate. Take one pill in the morning after breakfast. I am very sorry. I cannot give you any medication for your hair loss because I have not seen the pattern of hair loss. However, I would like to give you some hair care tips here. Always use lukewarm water for washing hair. Never use hot water. Do not comb when hair is wet. Do not use a hair dryer. Allow it to dry naturally after the bath. Avoid hot iron straighteners; it breaks the protein bond in hair, making hair brittle. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. You need to take more protein every day like eggs, fish, curd, milk, lentils, and chicken. Regular exercise for 40 minutes a day, six days a week, to keep the hormonal balance intact. Use a comb that has a wide space between each tooth, and the tip of the tooth should be blunt. Comb gently. Avoid smoking. Nicotine decreases blood supply to the hair roots, affecting hair growth. Avoid tight ponies. It would cause traction on hair, eventually leading to hair fall from the frontal area. Keep the hair loosely tied. Hope this little piece of information is helpful to you. Take care.
