Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been diagnosed with herpes simplex virus type 1 infection. I have had oral sex a few times back in my college days, but recently I decided to get tested and found out that I have herpes infection. I am getting married soon and do not want to give it to my wife or future kids. What should I do? I am so worried and depressed. I feel like giving up on life. Is my sex life ruined now? Will I give it to my wife once I get married? Will my kids also have it after they are born? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query. The test report shows HSV-1 IgG (herpes simplex virus-1 immunoglobulin G) positive (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). It usually suggests a past infection. Do you have any lesions at present or earlier? If so, please specify the site, distribution, duration, symptoms, etc. If you have lesions at present, you can take antiviral drugs after consulting your doctor. Firstly do not panic. It is not a serious disease to worry about. But it is known for its recurrence. Depending on the site, it can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or by kissing and sexual intercourse. You have to take precautions when there are active lesions, as the chances of transmission are higher.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

What can I do now? I am so worried that I will transfer it to my wife and future kids. I do not have any symptoms. What precautions can I take before having sex? Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please specify some details like the site of lesion, source of infection from where you acquired, duration, symptoms, etc., for a better solution.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I have had oral sex multiple times during my college days. Will that be a cause? Please explain.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The chances of transmission of herpes infection are higher when there are active lesions. So avoid kissing, sharing common objects like utensils, etc., during active lesions. You can speak with your partner clearly about these lesions. You can consult your doctor for using antiviral drugs for suppressive therapy if and when required. I hope this clears your doubt. Thanks.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
