My 28 years old boyfriend went to a doctor, and he was told that he had high blood pressure. His blood pressure was 160/90 mmHg. He has never had high blood pressure before this but has had general anxiety daily for a long time. He did not want to take blood pressure medicine because he was afraid of it, so the doctor prescribed Zoloft instead. I have heard a lot of scary things about antidepressants and feel like he should have gone with the blood pressure medicine, and I do not think that Zoloft was a good idea. He also suffers from sleep apnea. Can you give any advice on Zoloft versus blood pressure medicine?
I understand your concern towards your boyfriend. Your boyfriend is having issues with high blood pressure because of sleep apnea. He is obese as his BMI (body mass index) is 33. Obesity can cause sleep apnea, while sleep apnea, in turn, leads to high blood pressure. The Zoloft (Sertraline) your doctor prescribed is for his anxiety and to help him sleep. In my clinic, in this kind of situation, I advise my patients to start by losing weight. Losing weight will help in reducing his blood pressure and help alleviate the sleep apnea. I also suggest taking antihypertensives like beta blockers (Bisoprolol), until they get to a considerable weight. He should also avoid smoking and alcohol and sleep on the side, not on his back. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicine after their consent. Best regards.
