Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a protected intercourse with a female sex worker. I tested negative for HIV ribonucleic acid polymerase chain reaction test, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) 1 and 2 antibodies, and protein 24 antigen test. Do I need any further testing or is it conclusive?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

The chances of transmission of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) by single protected intercourse is almost nil if the condom was used in a proper manner. The chances of HIV tests coming positive later is almost nil, with the given test results and dates. But it may be better to go for HIV antibodies test after 90 days exposure to be relieved from anxiety totally and conclusive results.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

The exposure was twice, like all happened within two hours on the same day. By considering centres of disease control and prevention HIV1 or 2 antibody and antigen protein 24 tests to be conclusive at 45 days (as per their guidelines). They consider waiting for 90 days for antibody test, or finger prick test. As I do not want to stay anxious for 90 days I am taking another test today at 28th day post exposure. Can I take another HIV antibody test at 45 days interval?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

HIV test is considered almost conclusive. But it may be better to go for an HIV antibody test after 90 days of exposure for conclusive results.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
