Can HIV negative test be concluded as confirmatory?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My age is 26, and I had unprotected oral sex. I licked a sex worker's vagina with a lotion. I had protected vaginal sex. Performed HIV tests on the 25th, 42nd, and 70th days. I also did HIV-1 PCR RNA qualitative on the 76th day. CMIA antibodies on the 70th day. Now, we will get the result of p24 on the 86th day. All my reports are negative. But I have rashes and recently got a cold. Are my test results conclusive? I feel each and every symptom to be related to HIV. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

HIV can never be diagnosed based on clinical symptoms. Moreover, symptoms of HIV include generalized lymphadenopathy, weight loss of more than 10% in a short duration, long-term diarrhea for more than one month, etc. You have done a CMIA (chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay) test after 70 days that detects both antigen and antibody. It gives a conclusive result after six weeks. So you may need not worry. However, the guideline says that you should repeat your HIV test after three months of exposure, and that too after 85 to 90 days of exposure.
