Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I live in a country where sex is really taboo if it is out of the context of marriage. Anyway, two days ago, I had two seconds of penetration with a girl, nothing more, then we realized there was no condom, and we did not continue. I am quite worried about HIV from that exposure. I did ask about her history, and she said she got a test three months ago and that it was all negative. I wanted to know if I should be worried? It would be of great help if you can tell me what to do and whether I should worry or not?

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query. The chances of transmission of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) by the described act even if she is HIV positive is very low. If she is negative, for sure, there is nothing to worry about. You can discuss with your doctor about risk assessment and a need for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis). It has to be initiated within 72 hours. Otherwise, go for HIV1 and 2, RNA PCR (polymerase chain reaction) after 12 to 14 days of exposure, and HIV antibodies test after three months exposure to be relieved of anxiety.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

PEP is not readily available in my country. Would you advise me to take PEP based on this exposure, or should I just let it go and get tested later?

Hi, Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query. If you are confident of the negative status, there is nothing to worry about. Also, the risk from the act described is very low. It may not be required with the given description and risk. You can take a call.
