Is there any chance of acquiring HIV after having a vaginal intercourse with a commercial sex worker?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Last week I met a commercial sex worker. I do not know her HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) status. First, we both kissed, and then she came on my lap, and I did not insert my penis. Then we kissed again, she did a blow job, and I took a condom and did vaginal intercourse. Again, I had no cuts on my penis. After that, in 24 hours, I took Tenofovir and Raltegravir tablets and continued that. Initial PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) results showed me non-detectable (within 24 hours). Does it look like she also has no cuts in the mouth, and is there any chance HIV can transmit to me? When will PEP (Post - exposure Prophylaxis) fail?

Hello, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is only active on the 15th day. So your test needed to be more conclusive. Therefore, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) to be taken for 28 days. If you go for the next episode, you have to start PEP again if unprotected sex, vaginal fluid, and rubbing off the penis all are dangerous. Consult a skin and venereal disease specialist. If symptoms are seen in kissing, go for an HSV (herpes simplex virus) test. At present, you must relax, do not worry, as you do not mention any symptoms.

Take care.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Thanks, doctor.

When will PEP fail? How effective is the current PEP drug?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No exact time is mentioned as it differs in different people according to immunity. However, it is post-exposure prophylaxis, so it takes three months.

Take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
