Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 48 year old mother is suffering from hypothyroidism from the last three years. The first test for thyroid was TSH, and the result was 15.18. The doctor started Thyroxin tablets of 50 mcg two tablets per day. After that, many times the tests have been done and the dose was increased. Now, she takes five tablets per day. Her recent test results are attached. Please tell me what should we do? What is the dose of Thyroxin tablets according to these reports? Her additional problems include depression, swelling on face, and temperature.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and went through the reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity).

From what you have mentioned, it appears that your mother is overcorrected for hypothyroidosm. I suggest that you decrease the dose of thyroxine from five tablets a day to three per day, that is, instead of 250 mcg per day, she can take 150 mcg per day. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and take the medicine accordingly. Repeat the thyroid function test after six weeks and get back for a review. You mentioned that she has a puffy face for which I would suggest that you do serum creatinine, cholesterol, liver function test and an ECG check. You can get back after you have done these tests.

Hope you find my advice beneficial. Good luck.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
