Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have taken an I-pill (Levonorgestrel) around 12 hours after sex. I want to know when does an I-pill start to work after taking it? What are the signs that it is working? After taking the pill, it has been three hours, and I have not faced any side effects.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I-pill is an emergency contraceptive pill and should be taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. As you have taken it within 12 hours, it is good. It will restrict ovulation if ovulation has not happened already. Suppose ovulation occurs before taking pills; then, it will not work, so it has a failure rate. You can have irregular menses after I-pill. You will get your period if it works. And another way to confirm whether it is working or not, do a pregnancy test on a urine kit after 14 to 15 days of taking pills, which is the earliest you can find out whether it worked or not. Drinking more water and waiting is the only option.

Hopefully, you got your answer. If you have any queries, you can ask.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Do I need to take a second pill?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No you do not need to take second pill. Now you have to wait for 15 days as I said.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have taken the pill two days back. When can I expect my period?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Normally periods should come on their time. But sometimes you get spotting after 5 to 8 days of taking pills. Periods can be delayed and irregular also after taking pills. And that is why I suggested doing a urine pregnancy test on the kit after 15 to 18 days. So even if periods are delayed by 10 to15 days, we can wait. Drink more water and wait for some days. And do the test after 15 to 18 days. This is the only ideal option.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am getting white particles in urine. What could be the reason?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You need to do a urine routine for confirmation of what it is. If it is an infection, it can be decreased by only drinking more and more water. If there is no burning sensation during or after micturition, then do not worry; it will go on its own.

Thank you.
