Can my age and shorter than regular cycles lower the possibility of pregnancy?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took BC pills for two months. In the first month, I had what I think was a normal period of 27 days, lasting about four days in total. My husband and I tried to conceive the next month; however, I had what I thought was my period at around day 26. The first day was light spotting; the second day was heavy flow, the third was light in the morning, and then it was gone by the end of the day. My periods are generally not this short. I am not pregnant, as I took a test, and it was negative. I am 35 years old and have had one pregnancy at 29, resulting in a healthy baby. I am worried that because of my age, I will not be able to get pregnant. Does this shorter-than-normal cycle mean I am not ovulating? When should I contact my doctor? I had a routine pap test last month and was given the go-ahead to begin trying. However, given my age, I do not want to wait too long. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The problem here is your weight. Your BMI (body mass index) is more than 24 kg/m².

If you have had a normal pregnancy previously, you will surely have another.

Ovulation should occur on time; that is why you got your period. Any periods in 28 days mean normal and that ovulation has occurred. But less bleeding means that the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrium, has reached the normal limits.

When you put on weight, especially around your waist, breast, and back, this central obesity gets converted into hormones and disturbs the hormonal balance. All you need to do is, have a regular healthy diet and work out well. Aerobic exercise, brisk walking, dancing, skipping, swimming, anything that suits you. Just reduce three to five kilograms over two to three months. This will correct your hormones and also improve your chances of pregnancy.

Few basic tests since you are trying for pregnancy.

1. Semen analysis of your partner.

2. Your pelvic scan to rule out any uterine or adnexal problem.

3. Tubal patency test with HSG (hysterosalpingography) or laparoscopy.

4. If age factor is your concern, check serum AMH (anti-müllerian hormone) within two weeks after a period. This will show you how many eggs are left in the ovaries.

You are fine and will surely get pregnant.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
