Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got these bumps suddenly appearing on my hands. The first one was on the thumb and index finger two weeks ago, and now another is on my middle finger. Not sure if this could be related, but I have a wart on my right foot. Is there any chance these are also warts? I had got it after scratching that region. May I know what these are and what home remedies I can do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. As per the history and the image provided (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), the new lesions in your hands are common warts, also called verruca vulgaris medically. Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). This viral infection can easily spread from one infected individual to another or may spread within your body if one lesion is present anywhere. As you have mentioned, the presence of a wart on your right foot may easily spread from your foot to your hand and then within the hand itself. They can be managed with medications and by mechanical removal. However, they may appear on and off later as well, and in case that occurs, please follow the same advice each time. The image is slightly unclear, but I would like to describe the lesion for your inspection and better understanding. It may appear whitish to skin-colored raised bump with a somewhat grainy appearance and may easily spread, and new lesions start appearing on the nearby areas as well. I suggest the following - A solution or paint containing Salicylic acid 16.7% + Lactic acid 16.7%, also known as wart removal solution. Method to use: Apply a layer of moisturizer around the lesion to prevent the solution from affecting the normal skin. Next, place a drop of the solution or paint on the lesion itself and place a plaster with cotton in the center to avoid direct contact with the adhesive part of the plaster on the lesion, as peeling it off may be painful. A regular band-aid may also be used instead of dressing. After applying the solution, there may be pain and burning sensation which is quite normal. This needs to be done at night. The next morning, slowly peel off the band-aid and wash the area, soak the affected area in lukewarm salt water to soften the lesion, and gently scrub the area with a nail filer or pumice stone. Do not overdo the same since the same procedure needs to be repeated daily, and over-scrubbing may cause bleeding. Be very, very gentle and only do it for a few seconds. Repeat the application of the solution or paint at night and soak and scrub in the morning for four weeks or till warts disappear. Tablet Ascazin 50 mg (Zinc Acetate 50 mg) to be taken twice daily. One in the morning after breakfast and one at night after dinner. This helps heal the lesion faster and prevents new ones from appearing. In addition, it helps fight viral infection. Take the same for one month. Radiofrequency electrocauterization - This is a procedure done by a dermatologist or cosmetologist at their medical centers wherein the lesions are burnt and removed slowly using a probe after injecting a local anesthetic. It may cause slight pain following the procedure and sometimes during the procedure in case it is too deep. But once it is removed, the warts are completely gone, and antibiotic creams may be prescribed for better healing of the wound left behind after the procedure. It may take two to four weeks to heal. Apart from the above procedure, the same is done using cryotherapy where the lesions are frozen or laser where they are burnt, similar to cauterization. However, consult the physician before following any of the suggestions. Home remedies may not entirely work in warts. Still, as I have mentioned, lukewarm salt water solution soaking in the morning after the previous night's treatment with the solution will slowly reduce its thickness and eventually its appearance. I hope this helps. Thank you and take care.
