Is IVF a good option if the spouse is suffering from low sperm motility due to varicocele?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had two miscarriages one year apart, five years ago. Initially, there was natural implantation but I had a miscarriage in the eighth week of my pregnancy. And, the second time I had an ectopic pregnancy. My AMH is 3.8 and my husband is suffering from low sperm motility due to varicocele. He has undergone surgery for the varicocele, but there is no improvement. We are now planning to go for IVF. I have been having many doubts about my husband's sperm quality and my low AMH.

Please give me your opinion.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

An AMH (anti-mullerian hormone) level of 1.05 ng/mL is considered as low. You have an AMH level of 3.8 ng/mL , which is actually sufficient. The low sperm motility of your husband is due to the varicocele. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a good option for you, but before that, you have to treat all your general health issues, and even your husband's. It is important to have a better general health before opting for IVF. In IVF, the doctors always try to make use of better quality products for conception that will reduce the risk of fetal abnormalities. The chances of fetal abnormalities are higher as compared to conception through IVF. The IVF procedure is carried out by following standard protocols and best techniques and the sperm and oocyte quality is of utmost importance. I suggest you follow the instructions given below to have a better conception -

  1. Focus more on improving the overall health of you and your husband.
  2. Abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs.
  3. Have a healthy diet including fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat good homecooked food, cooked with less oil, spices, salt, and sugar. Maintain a good weight according to your BMI (body mass index).
  4. Exercise reularly, practice meditation, and indulge in recreational activities along with your husband.
  5. Take one tablet of Folivit (folic acid) 5 mg daily.
  6. You may need blood thinning medications such as Aspirin and Heparin after positive conception. This will be directed by your doctor. It will be better if you discuss your previous miscarriage reports with your current treating doctor.
  7. Be positive and happy at all times.
  8. I hope this has helped you out.

    Good luck.

    Thanks and regards.
