Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a strange sensation in my leg for around two years. It usually only affects the lower half of the left leg and foot but has recently encompassed the upper sections. This is accentuated when walking and more so when the pace gets quicker. The feelings feel as if my lower leg and foot are quite light on the lift and not entirely under my control. The foot can feel as if it wants to turn in when I am running but never does, almost like a buzzy electric wave feeling. There is no weakness of the leg itself. I have suffered from cold feet over the years, and these can be pronounced, making the foot very stiff so that wiggling the foot and toes can be quite difficult. It can occasionally feel as if there is a block in the leg. The same sensation with a feeling there is a block can be felt in the forearm also. There are icy hands as well, which can affect ability with the thumb numbness now and then. When sitting, the feet feel as if they are stretching out with light relief available when I do. I am worried about motor neurone disease (MND).

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I read your query. As per your symptoms, there can be chances of motor neuron disease (MND). In MND, there are also other symptoms, and there are chances of underlying sclerosis. But you can not rule it out on your own. You need a clinical examination by a trained physician. So I advise you to visit a nearby reputed physician and ask for the complete examination. Once a proper diagnosis is made, only then start taking treatment rather than taking random treatment. I hope you understand my point.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I have previously been to see a neurologist and had a full medical. All came back fine. I had three previous operations on my legs for varicose veins, which may have something to do with things? Also, I have had an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and blood, and everything was ok. I have been diagnosed with mild Reynaud's, which does cause cold and numb sensations. These feelings come and go with no weakness or strength issues to mention. There is quite a bit of anxiety understandably, which has made the issue more pressing for myself. I have no related symptoms of MND such as twitching or muscle cramps or any atrophy. What could it be?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. As you have mentioned about Raynaud's disease, this phenomena is a complex one and do not have any exact cause. In this problem, some areas of the body generally toes, thumbs, legs, etc. feel numb and cooling in certain circumstances. Excessive cold weather and stress provoke this condition. So try to get rid of extreme stress. In this problem, the smaller arteries that supply blood to the skin constrict excessively in response to cold, limiting blood supply to the affected area. But the blood supply to vital organs remains proper. Varicose veins can also be an underlying cause, but the pathology of this problem is a complex one. The primary management includes covering the body properly like using mittens, gloves, earmuffs, and socks, etc. and taking care of the cold environment. Heat your car and home properly. Also, wear mittens while taking out food from the refrigerator and washing clothes. Along with these, I advise you to take Ayurvedic supplements for some time. They will help you in getting rid of excessive cold sensation. Tablet Kaishore Guggulu two tablets two times a day with lukewarm water after food for one month. Do not swallow this tablet, first chew it and then take it with lukewarm water. Capsule Ashwagandha two capsules two times a day with water after food for one month. You can also use a simple home remedy. Take some seeds of cumin and mustard. Fry them profoundly and then char them. Then a black colored powder had been made. Add this powder to sesame oil. Heat this mixture for a while but do not burn it. A pinch of black salt can be added after heating. After cooling store it in a glass container. Apply this oil gently on the affected area. After one hour of application pour lukewarm water for 10 minutes. It will help in increasing blood flow and will also lessen your sensation with time. I hope you understand my point. Try all these things regularly, and you will feel better results soon. You can find Ayurvedic medicines in a nearby Ayurveda store. Consult a nearby Ayurveda physician or me after one month regarding improvement and for further management. I hope you understand my point. the probable causes may be cold environment, stress and varicose veins. Investigations to be done are MRI but not needed right now. Differential diagnosis may be motor neuron disease (MND).

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
