Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend had gotten her thyroid gland removed due to a suspicious follicular adenoma. However, no cancer was found in the biopsy after the surgery. I have a few questions regarding her health issues. What are the side effects of consuming synthetic Levothyroxine for the whole life on the kidneys, heart, and liver? What will be her lifespan without a thyroid gland? Will be she able to conceive? Is there any relationship between Levothyroxine, breast cancer, and osteoporosis?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

For the metabolic functions of the body, thyroid hormone is needed. As she has no thyroid gland, thyroid hormone supplements will do the needful. So she has been prescribed Levothyroxine. The dose of the tablet Levothyroxine (synthetic thyroid hormone) is adjusted according to serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. Therefore, I suggest you check serum TSH levels every three to five months. Levothyroxine in excess dose can lead to irritability, headache, palpitation, etc.

It can lead to no other serious side effects. If the TSH level is maintained within range then pregnancy can be possible and during pregnancy, strict TSH level observation is needed. I suggest consulting an endocrinologist for examination and doing a follow-up with serum TSH level every three to six months.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
