Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past three to four months, I have been experiencing some sort of a side back pain when I turn or twist to the right. I also noticed that I have been having loose stools as well, all this period. I went to the hospital for a check up and was asked to go for a scan. I did the scan but nothing was found. The doctor asked about my occupation and I told him I am an IT (information technology) person. Actually over the years, I sit for a long time on my computer. But the question is, can a side back pain affect continuous bowel movement? Please also note that medications like Ciprofloxacin and Flagyl (Metronidazole) were administered to me for loose stools in the hospital. It stops for a while but comes back again. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query. Sorry for the discomfort you are having. I have seen your USG (ultrasonography) report (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it is normal. Side lower back pain with continuous bowel movements that is loose stool is an unusual association. Side back pain may be due to continuous sitting in a fixed posture. Try to do some physical exercises of back to get relieved from it. Is your right side lower back pain has been always associated with diarrhea? You mention that your loose stool got controlled with medicine but again started. I want to ask whether you still have back pain now with loose stool or was there any lower back pain on right side when diarrhea was controlled? Good thing is that your USG abdomen is normal and there is no abnormality found like renal stone, etc. May be your relapse of loose stool is diet related. Please take the above prescribed medication for diarrhea and do the stool examination if it is recurring again. I hope you find this helpful. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply. The pain still persists even after taking the medications for loose stool. The pain is still there, most especially, when I turn my waist to the right. I am 48 years old and I have never experienced this before. The loose stool has continued (with bowel rumblings) for more than three months.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Loose stool for more than three months is chronic diarrhea. It warrants evaluation to exclude any underlying pathology. There are many causes of chronic diarrhea but investigations are tailored according to the patient's medical history and physical examination. I can write here many investigations to be done but without knowing your proper medical history it will not serve the purpose and it will be an unnecessary expense for you. You need to visit a speciality doctor to evaluate your condition. Regarding back pain, I think it is due to continuous sitting posture. Try usual painkillers or get an X-ray done of the lumbar area to see any origin due to the spine. Kindly follow-up for further queries. Thank you.
