Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with dengue almost four years back and my blood platelet count also subsequently dropped to 70000 mcL. Within the next five days, it was raised to 90000 mcL but it was not returning to the normal level of 150000 mcL even in the blood test report taken after fifteen days. During dengue, I did not have any symptoms other than weakness and skin rash. This dengue and low platelet count was identified only during a routine blood test for CBC (complete blood count) and blood sugar. I also had dengue previously about six months before diagnosing. At present, I have symptoms like tiredness, slight breathlessness, insufficient sleep, and occasional skin rashes which disappear on their own. I am very much worried about my platelet count not returning to a normal level as during the last three tests done with a gap of ten days, it remained at 85000 mcL to 90000 mcL. I have taken a complete blood count, liver function test, dengue IgG and IgM, and urea creatinine. All other blood components in the complete blood count report are within specification. Currently, I am taking one tablet of Metformin HCl 500 mg daily for the past 10 days after identifying high blood sugar. I can share all my reports if required. Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Your concern is that your platelet count remains persistently low for a few days. You are giving a dengue positivity history which can lead to a low platelet count if not recovered fully. You can follow the following steps:

  1. Drink more water.
  2. Papaya leaf extract syrup can be used.

Symptomatic management can be done for dengue. You can investigate further with a peripheral smear examination report to look for any other abnormal findings if present. If the platelet count is low even after a few days with no obvious cause identified and if the clinical deterioration is present, then higher investigations like bone marrow aspiration can be planned. Mostly your platelet count will improve in a few days and consult a hematologist for examination.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
