Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had pain in the neck region for about seven to eight months. I have pointed the exact site of pain in the photo. I feel a cramping type of pain when I yawn or laugh. My height is 6'2," and I have been working from home due to the COVID pandemic for the past two years. I have a newborn baby who I also hold in my arms quite sometime. This made my posture look bad. I have been diagnosed with OCD. I have severe health anxiety. I visited an ENT doctor three years ago, and they put a camera down my throat because I thought I had throat cancer as there was a lump behind my left ear. And I had an ultrasound on that region. Both examinations came back clear. And I had testicular cancer eight years ago and had my last CT scan two years ago. I am now cured. Can you kindly review my question and ease my mind a little? I am worried that it could be a tumor growing in my neck, which has gone undiagnosed.

Thanks, doctor.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The lump in your neck is something benign. Since your ultrasound report of neck and laryngoscope examinations are normal, this is reassuring. The area you are pointing to in the photo is far away from the thyroid, so unlikely to be a thyroid disorder (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). Kindly answer me the following to help you better,

1) Do you have postnasal drip, allergies, acid reflux, or dry mouth.

2) Do you take any medicines now?

3) Do you have pain near the TMJ (temporomandibular joint)?

This is most likely something simple and can easily be treated. Kindly focus on the ergonomics and invest in a good table and chair to minimize the stress of your neck muscles while working. And I suggest you gargle with lukewarm water with salt before going to bed.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

My left jaw is clicking. It locks and then clicks until it is released. I do not have pain in the TMJ region. The pain is exactly underneath the jaw, and it is on and off. I could feel a bruise on the back of my neck. I perform weight lifting exercises thrice a week.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you try anti-inflammatory medicines such as Indomethacin for the pain and bruise behind your neck. As you do weight lifting, you must know very well the importance of physical form. So work on it; please correct if you have any issues with the form. Also, remember to maintain a good posture when you are at your desk and when carrying your baby.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you so much for the reply. I have taken two tablets of Ibuprofen and I still feel pain in my neck. Do I need a few more doses of Ibuprofen to get relief?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to iCliniq.com

Try taking Ibuprofen 600 mg after food twice daily for three days.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks again for your response.

What should I do if that does not help?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

For the pain in the front of the neck, I suggest you take antihistamine like Levocetirizine and for the pain or tenderness in the back of the neck, I would recommend you to continue the current management with pain killers as and when required.

Thanks.
