Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 23-years-old, male with a slightly palpable enlarged lymph nodes near the right side of the neck (region near posterior cervical node). I am not sure if it is soft or rubbery, but it is not hard or solid. It is movable and non tender.

I recently plugged my ear too hard and it is clogged for more than five days. Therefore, my hearing of my right ear is not 100 % and felt like the air is sucked inside (vacuum). I am not sure if this is counted as ear infection. So my question is, is it possible that the clogged ear or ear infection can cause enlargement of the lymph nodes in neck, particularly near the posterior region? Could it be cancerous lymph nodes or other possible causes? In the last month, I did not experience fever, coughing, night sweat, dizziness, weight loss, maybe just some mild sore throat.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Is it visible outside? If possible take pictures and send. Is there enlarged tonsils? Is your throat alright?

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

It is not visible. It is even not palpable when I gently run my finger down the neck. However, when I press down by applying some pressure with my fingers in a circular motion, I can feel it.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Lets assess the issue in the following manner- 1. With the ear picture (attachment removed to protect patient identity), I feel there is some brownish discharge in the outsides. Is it possible that you can ask someone to pull the pinna to make the canal straighter and click a picture? Because I want to rule out the possibility of wax. Also, when the pinna is getting pulled if there is severe pain then that means an outer ear or the canal infection.

2. Regarding the neck pictures, they look fantastic and narrow and aesthetically great. So, there is no swelling visible and the skin over any palpable swelling appears normal.

3. Regarding the location of the nose- it might be in the posterior cervical region, but not to worry. If there is any infection in its draining region, say the posterior scalp may be having dandruff, then these nodes can swell up. They may be non-tender.

4. Regarding the ear clog, I need to know a few things. First, was the clog preceded by any nose block or throat pain? That would mean the tube connecting the back of nose to the ear could have transmitted the infection to the middle ear from the nose and caused the clog. Otherwise it might be just wax.

In any case, any ear infection, say outer or middle, can swell up the draining lymph nodes and that does not mean cancer. The first thing we do is give a course of antibiotics after ruling out the above points. So, kindly let me know the answers to the above. Please also tell me if you smoke or drink and if yes, since when and how much. Nevertheless, do not worry. It seems to me like a simple issue and nothing that you should worry about.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
