Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I used to enjoy studying, but for a few months, I completely lost my concentration and focus on my studies, and I cannot control my mind. I always feel empty, pathetic, helpless, and hopeless. I just sit on my chair every day doing nothing. Sometimes, I read novels online, which seems like an addiction since I do not enjoy them, but I cannot stop myself. I have a life-changing exam next week, but I am so unprepared and do not want to give up. I want to rest and study, but I cannot. I am not suicidal, but I feel helpless and have low self-esteem. I have been trying to regain my focus and passion, to find some hope or control over my mind, but nothing works. Motivation and counseling from my peers and parents have not helped. My health is also declining, and I have lost weight. I feel tired and sleepy all the time. I feel lost. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your situation.

You may have a major depressive disorder. Therefore, you need to follow the below guidelines, which can help you.

  1. Try exercising daily for 30 to 45 minutes or go for a walk.
  2. Meditate daily for 20 minutes by sitting in a comfortable position and concentrating on your normal breathing. Do not stop your flow of thoughts to increase your concentration.
  3. Eat home-cooked foods and avoid junk foods.
  4. Drink enough water.
  5. Spend time with your friends and family daily or do video calls if you are living away from your family.
  6. Nurture your creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.
  7. Sleep daily for seven to eight hours.
  8. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.
  9. Do not waste your life. Start living it.
  10. Be bold and confident.
  11. Respect yourself and love yourself.
  12. Seek help from seniors and colleagues for exam preparation.
  13. Find a study partner for exam preparation.
