Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son, aged 23 years, started suffering from hair loss at 17 years. Initially, his hair became thin, followed by severe hair loss. I took him to a dermatologist, who prescribed multivitamins and application of Minoxidil, but there were no results. All his blood tests, including vitamin D, thyroid profile, and CBC, were regular, and there is no history of baldness in our family. We also tried homeopathy, but no results. He seems to be suffering from male pattern baldness. Recently I took him to another dermatologist, who prescribed Finax 1 mg, and said that it has to be taken for two years to give results. It is said that this medicine can give harmful side effects like impotence and erectile dysfunction, so, I would like your opinion.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Finax (Finasteride) oral tablet is considered the best drug for male pattern hair fall and works on 99 % of patients. We use it in combination with Minoxidil hair drop (always use two treatment modalities together). Now, Finasteride does have chances of side effects, but it is rare and is seen in only two percent of people. Stop the tablet if you experience any side effects; the side effects are reversible. If you do not want to take the Finasteride tablet, your second best option is (Minoxidil+Finasteride) combination drops to apply. This is better than plain Minoxidil and does not have the side effects of oral Finasteride.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I will give my son Finasteride 1 mg. But, I have a question, should my son go for the hair transplant now, or should he first take Finasteride for a few months? And does Finasteride re-grow hair on the bald areas of the scalp? My aim is that my son should re-gain his hair with medication. A hair transplant should be the last option. Just for your information, there is no family history of baldness in my family. Your opinion will be really appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No hair transplant is required right now. Finasteride and Minoxidil will help regrowth hair to a certain extent. You will be able to tell best after a year of treatment. Remember, Finasteride and Minoxidil is required even after hair transplant.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
