Hiatus Hernia

A hiatal hernia is when the upper part of the stomach is pushed into the diaphragm and chest. Obesity, smoking, and aging are some factors that increase the risk of developing a hiatal hernia. Frequent coughing, vomiting, straining during bowel movements, and lifting heavy objects are other risk factors. The symptoms are heartburn, trouble swallowing, burping, and abdominal discomfort. Taking antacids and proton pump inhibitors helps to provide some relief. In severe cases, surgery is required.
