Common "High Ferritin" queries answered by top doctors | iCliniq

High Ferritin

Ferritin is an iron-containing protein stored inside the cells. Ferritin levels help determine iron deficiency and iron overload. High ferritin levels indicate iron overload or high iron levels in case of hemochromatosis, repeated blood transfusions, and accidental surplus iron supplement ingestion. High iron levels are dangerous as they may build up in various organs and damage them over time. High ferritin levels may be present even if the body's iron level is normal, as in acute infections, COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), alcoholism, hepatitis, etc.
