Brain damage in infants can be due to acquired or traumatic brain injury. Traumatic injury is due to external physical force or pressure exerted on the head during childbirth. Acquired injury is due to internal causes occuring in the skull. Damage caused during childbirth often causes symptoms which are mild and may be delayed. On the other hand, if the damage is severe, the symptoms are exhibited soon after birth which include, distorted facial features, increased forehead size, neck stiffness, small skull size, abnormal eye movements, and malformed spine. Infants with brain damage may develop sleeping disorders or light sensitivity.
