In an early pregnancy ultrasound scan, there may be visibility of the pregnancy sac in the uterus with an undetectable heart rate. This is a usual finding in early pregnancy (less than six weeks of conception), but it is also a finding in failed pregnancies. Hence to rule out possible complications, a re-scan is done preferably 7 to 14 days later. If the same condition prevails (mostly, miscarriage happens within the next scan), sadly, it is a failed pregnancy.
