Poikilocytosis

Poikilocytosis indicates the presence of abnormally shaped red blood cells in the blood. Usually, red blood cells appear disk-shaped with a flattened center on both sides. In poikilocytes, they appear flatter. It can occur due to inherited cause and acquired cause. Sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, pyruvate kinase deficiency, and hereditary spherocytosis are some inherited causes that cause poikilocytosis. It can occur due to chemotherapy, lead poisoning, cancer, and severe infections. It is treated depending on the cause.
