Septic abortion is a serious uterine infection that occurs during or before or after abortion. It occurs due to induced abortion done by an untrained practitioner using non-sterile techniques. It cuases infection due to Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, and Hemolytic streptococci. The symptoms and signs appear immediately within 24 to 48 hours of abortion. The symptoms are chills, fever, vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain. It is treated with intensive antibiotic therapy and uterine evacuation.
