In the case of primary tumors of the pancreas, a patient would very much benefit if one could do a surgical removal of the pancreas. But if there is metastasis, this cannot be very beneficial but certainly helps relieve symptoms and prevent other complications for the patient. Either the surgeon will conduct a distal pancreatectomy where only the body and tail of the pancreas will be removed or they will go for a total pancreatectomy, where the entire pancreas and additional structured will be removed.
