Thromboembolic Event

A clot formation within the blood vessels leads to a thromboembolic event. Such clots more frequently occur due to old age, obesity, chronic hospitalization, immobility, prolonged flight travel, varicose veins, smoking, oral contraceptive medications, pregnancy, congestive heart failure, limb surgery, myocardial infarction, nephrotic syndrome, hematologic disorders, etc. When a clot formed in the leg's deep veins (deep vein thrombosis) gets detached and blocks pulmonary arteries, it is known as pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism together form venous thromboembolism. This can lead to pain and swelling in the affected limb, pulmonary hypertension, cor pulmonale, dyspnea, syncope, shock, and hypotension. Direct-acting oral anticoagulants and thrombolytic therapy are the preferred treatment modalities.
