Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 2 year old child has knock knees. Is there any treatment for this condition without surgery?

Hello,

Welcome to iIcliniq.com.

  • Knock knees or genu valgum is a condition in which the leg is misaligned to thigh and grows outwards. There is inability to touch both the feet together due to inward angulation of the knee.
  • It can be both physiological and secondary to an underlying metabolic condition like rickets.
  • The management actually depends upon the Valgus angle of the knee and results of blood tests.

So, I would advise the following:

  • Get a full length x-ray or if possible a CT scanogram done so that the Valgus angle can be measured.
  • The Intermalleolar distance is an important parameter. Intermalleolar distance is the distance between the two malleoli (bony prominence on the inner side of the ankles) when the knees are touching each other. So, if you can tell me how much is that, it will be useful.
  • Please get these blood tests done form a good lab and send the reports - serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone levels and serum 25 hydroxy and 1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D levels and kidney function tests.

Once you get these tests done, I can correlate them and let you know what will be the correct management for your child.
