Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have PCOD for about 15 years. I have all symptoms of pcod and irregular periods problem. I had one miscarriage 5 years ago due to cervical incompetence. I just started taking Kalarchi choornam for 48 days and facing some side effects. My body is developing heat and I have got some pimples on my face which are painful. Please suggest remedy. Can I continue taking that choornam? Will my pcod get cured?

Answered by Dr. Arul Amuthan L

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Kalarchi choornam can be continued for a minimum of 3 months and to a maximum of 6 months. The heat and pimples might be due to PCOD itself. Some people develop flatulence (gas trouble) due to Kalarchi choornam. This can be prevented by consuming the drug along with (or after) food and by taking more curd or buttermilk. I would advise the following drugs in addition for treatment of PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease):

  • Kuliyal choornam - to apply on face. This will cure pimples and remove scars.
    • Siddhadhi ennai 15 ml (or Agathiyar kuzhambu) to be taken at 6 AM. This will cause diarrhea for 10-15 times. This should be taken under supervision of Siddha doctors. This drug resets the hormonal cycle and brings normal level of hormones. This medicine should be taken continuously 3 days (during menstrual period days) or one time per month.
      • Nandhi mezhugu 1 capsule in the morning and one at night after food for 3 months. This is to remove cysts in ovary.
        • Vishnukranthi (a small creeping plant) - take 50 g and boil in 150 ml water in slow flame to reduce water into 40 mL. Consume this kashayam at morning 6 AM (empty stomach) for 14 days continuously. This will help in maturation of follicles.
          • Have kollu thuvaiyal (horsegram paste) and kollu rasam (horsegram soup) daily as a food.
            • Pudina chutney (mint paste) - compulsorily have it daily for lunch and dinner. Or just make a paste with mint leaves and consume it two times a day. It is a very effective diet for PCOD.
              • Avoid - oil, fat, cashew nut, almonds, pistachio nuts, chicken, egg, etc. More cholesterol will lead to more testosterone formation (PCOD will worsen). If you consume any of the above, pimples will appear the very next day.
                • Continuous monitoring with physician is important. Once periods become regular, then you can check ultrasonogram to see follicle development.
                • I hope this will be helpful to you and my wishes for better health.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much. As you said it is because of some reason I got pimples and body heat. Now I am fine and my pimples have reduced. After taking Kalarchi choornam for one month I took a scan two days back, Doctor said my cysts reduced. I am happy after hearing this. So, I am thinking of continuing the choornam for two more months till my periods get regular. If I stop after everything is solved, will the cyst get increased again? Will my periods stay regular life long? One more problem started when I saw the scan. I have a stone of 1.5 cm size in my gallbladder. Doctor said that surgery is the only option. I am worried. Is there any solution for gallstone? Please suggest some medicine to avoid surgery. Can it be taken along with Kalarchi choornam?

Answered by Dr. Arul Amuthan L

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • If you just wish to cure PCOD, then Kalarchi choornam, Nandhi mezhugu and Pudina chutney (mint paste) itself enough.
  • If you wish to get conceive, then other siddha drugs are also required. Especially to prepare uterus - Kumari legiyam for three months.
  • To stimulate follicle (ovum) growth, Malai Vembadi thailam or Kumatti ennai - 15 mL during menstrual days (three days).
  • If no menstruation, monthly three days, if you take, we can prepare uterus, ovary and hormones for conception.
  • Even though the cyst disappears after drugs, it may come again as we are suffering from improper diet, stressful life and polluted environment. Thus, better continue the drugs until get pregnancy.
  • I have not seen your physical condition and pulse. Thus, not able to decide the day-to-day medication requirements.
  • Regarding gallstone, it is due to the improper cholesterol metabolism. There is no successful drug. But, 1.5 cm is not in a worry side to do surgery.
  • Since it is the early stage, you can continue Nilavarai choornam - 5 g at night with warm water every alternate day. This drug make proper flow of body cholesterol into gall bladder, thus does not allow the stone size to increase. It also relieves constipation. In very few patients, stone disappeared, but not in all cases.
  • The only time for surgery is, if you feel pain in right upper abdomen or right shoulder. Otherwise, surgery is not required. The stone may grow too big after 5 years from today. At that time, surgery (laparoscopy) might be required. If you are lucky, then Nilavarai choornam can dissolve stone. Thus, now no need to worry about it.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I bought Kumari legiyam. How much and when to take it? Please tell me in detail. I have started Malai Vembadi thailam and Nilavarai choornam also. Thanks for your advice doctor. I have one more doubt. Many people say that there will be a problem in kidney if we take siddha or ayurveda medicine. But I am very happy that these medicines started reacting in my body. Please clarify it. Hope everything gets alright and will get pregnant soon because my age is already 32.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • I would like to clarify your most important concern about renal damage caused by Siddha drug. It means treat the patient with shoots and roots. If not responding, then gradually start metal or mineral based drugs.
  • Always we treat any patient with herbal therapy. Only in certain severe conditions (cancer, autoimmune disorders, etc.,) we give herbo-mineral drugs. In such case, we explain to patient about it.
  • In the meantime, we observe the liver or renal damage through blood test. If there is damage, immediately we stop the drug. The same practice is being done in allopathy as well.
  • Anticancer and autoimmune drugs definitely case side effects. And it is also managed by using some set of herbals. But, in general people simply give the statement of renal damage which is absolutely wrong.
  • Till now no scientific proof for the renal damage. I do not know on what basis they claim the side effect. We can always track out kidney function by just checking urea and creatinine in blood, as well as protein in urine. Once in four months, it can be done in any laboratory to have a confident.
  • Kumari legiyam should be taken 5 g (1 tea spoon) morning and 5 g at night, before food. Continue until pregnancy is confirmed. Once confirmed, it should be stopped.
  • Nilavarai choornam at night 2 g. Put the powder into your mouth, pour warm water and swallow or mix it with hot water in a tumbler, then drink it. It should be taken only once before bedtime. This can be taken every third day. Continuous intake leads to reduction of intestinal bacterial flora as they are washed out. Consume buttermilk or curd to increase the beneficial bacterial flora.
  • Malai vembadi thailam should be taken only during the menstrual days, for three days. Each day, at early morning 6 am, 15 mL of the drug should be drunk in empty stomach. Then you can put sweet or sugar in tongue to reduce the bitterness.
  • You may get vomiting and diarrhea. Let it happen. Nothing will harm you. You can drink glucose water or rice boiled water with mild salt. You also can drink buttermilk with salt. Once the diarrhea and vomiting are stopped, take a head bath in normal room temperature water.
  • Eat only curd rice in the day. The same procedure is to be continued for three days during the menstrual period. You should apply leave and stay back in home - It is important.
  • Fourth day, only idly and curd rice is allowed. Fifth day onwards, you can eat normal foods. 11, 12, 14 days you should try for intercourse. Many people get success in the first attempt. This induces the healthy ovum production.
  • If you are getting only one or two day leave then at least take the drug at that time. Ideally, it should be for all three days of menstrual days starting from day 1, 2 and 3.
  • If not get conceived, the same three days medicine should be taken during next menstrual cycle. Maximum, you can try for three cycles.
  • During the fertility treatment, be relaxed, relax mind and body, increase the confident level and talk with positive minded people.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My last period was a month back. That too it was induced withdrawal. After that I did not get it. I took Malai Vembadi thailam 15 mL that is one tablespoon but I did not get any diarrhea or vomiting. Is that fine? Should I increase the quantity next time? If my periods come in nearby, should I take this again? Or only after one month? Please suggest.

Answered by Dr. Arul Amuthan L

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • If diarrhea is not there, no need worry. Do not increase the dose.
  • When the period seen, the drug should be taken on the immediate morning, for three continuous days. This is to induce ovum growth and to release it.
  • If no periods, then also it can be taken when you induce menstruation by withdrawing drug.
  • Now, if you are not under the medication, then take the Malai Vembadi thailam after 28 days from this dose, assuming that this is the one menstrual cycle. Try to take continuous three days, if time permits.
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, bitterness are the side effects of Malai Vembu thailam. All patients may not get the side effects.
