Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got off my period two days back, but I have been spotting since yesterday. It is dark brown and sometimes pinkish. What does this mean?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Some spotting (dark brown or pinkish discharge that you have been noticing) at the end of periods is natural as your blood discharge decreases significantly. So there is absolutely nothing to worry about if it does not extend beyond the sixth or seventh day of your menstrual cycle (starting date counted as day one). But suppose you experience this beyond these days and for a time, you need to evaluate your self for any hormonal disturbances or any underlying structural causes like thickened uterine lining or any uterine polyps or fibroids. I would like to know if you have regular periods with the proper flow. If this is not the first time and has been experiencing this off and on, it would be advisable to consult your gynecologist for check-up and evaluation once. I hope this information helps you. Please feel free to revert anytime for any further queries or information. Have a nice day. Take care.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

It is the first time that I have done this outside of my period. I usually bleed for seven days; then, I am good to go.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would advise you to wait and observe for another three to four days and see. If it still does not stop by, then you can approach your gynecologist. Also, get an ultrasound to check if things are fine if this continues for long. Also, get your thyroid and prolactin levels checked. Exercise regularly and eat healthily. The treatment will depend on the underlying cause, so if this spotting persists, get yourself checked. As of now, I would advise you to wait for another few days and see. If it stops, you can observe if this repeats in your next cycles as well. Also, keep a check on the dates and amount of flow during your periods. Report if there are any irregularities in your cycles in the future.

Take care.
