Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

These days I get depressed a lot. I fear I am not worthy of anything. I want to study astrophysics and be a researcher but due to academic pressure, I get stressed. I am a good student and topper in my class but due to my parents' constant fights and arguments, I get disturbed mentally. I am totally down. I am not me. I can feel it and cannot do anything about it. I hate everyone. I do not want anyone. I feel like shouting from my lungs. I want to scream but I cannot. Sometimes, I get suicidal thoughts. I do not know what to do.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your difficult position due to stress in the family. Remember it is not your fault and it is common for young people to feel stressed and low in the mood when facing problems at home or outside. First, try to discuss your problems with either of your parents when they are in a calmer mood. You can also discuss this with a trusted uncle, aunt, or grandparent. Do not suffer alone at such a young age. When you are experiencing negative and suicidal thoughts, do not be alone. Discuss with a trusted member of the family who can understand and support you. Try to change things under your control and do not worry too much which you cannot control. Try to relax. You can try progressive muscle relaxation exercises and deep breathing exercises. Eat and sleep regularly. Do regular physical activities like walking, watching TV, listen to songs at least for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Do not get bogged down by studies alone. If your mood does not improve in one to two weeks, it will benefit you to see your family doctor to rule out clinical depression. If depressed, you will need talking therapy or counseling, sometimes antidepressant medication will also be prescribed to make you feel better. Remember these difficulties are temporary. You will get better and I wish you are able to pursue a research career in astrophysics. Discuss with your parents. You can even show them this response.

Thank you.
