Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had missed my period. Last month mid I got my periods. I had unprotected sex on the last day of last month. Yesterday I checked, it is showing that I am pregnant. How is it possible? Please explain.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. First, let me explain the fertile period and safe period in a menstrual cycle.

Day 1 to 7 of your period (starting on the first day of your period, in your case, it is mid of last month) is considered as the safe period. During this time, the ovaries are inactive, and the uterine lining is shed out as menstrual blood and hence is very thin and not receptive to any implant. Thus any unprotected sex during this period has a meager chance of leading to pregnancy. Day 8 to 11 is again relatively safe, but chances of pregnancy are higher. Day 12 to 18 of your cycle is called the fertile window. The chances of pregnancy from unprotected intercourse are very high as all conditions are optimal, and ovulation also occurs during this window. Day 20 to 28 chances of pregnancy are low. So accordingly, as your sexual intercourse falls right in the middle of the fertile window, there is an increased chance of pregnancy. And as the urine pregnancy test can detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine by day 14 of single fruitful coitus or 30 days from the date of your last period, your pregnancy kit shows positive. If in doubt, kindly repeat the test. I hope this was useful.

Regards.
