Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am unmarried and my age is 40. I had severe bleeding during my menstrual period. So, I met a gynecologist and found out that I have multiple fibroids in my uterus and the largest one is 1.1 x 1.1 inch. And my uterus was bulky. She advised me to take Fibroease 25 mg daily for three months and after three months, to meet her. Two months are over. But after taking the tablet, I did not have menstruation for almost 70 days. I am also taking Oxetol 300 mg daily for epilepsy. What do I have to do? My family members suggested me to undergo surgery and remove the uterus. Kindly advice me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, Fibroease (Mifepristone) causes amenorrhoea owing to anti-progesterone and anti-glucocorticoid effect. It is known to reduce the size by often 35 to 40 % and increase the hemoglobin as well in symptomatic perimenopausal age group women, where the aim is to avoid hysterectomies in cases of symptomatic fibroids. The only disadvantage is that endometrial hyperplasia ensues which could become atypical and malignant changes may occur. Hence, therapy should be not more than three months and endometrial biopsy should be taken if no menses post stoppage of treatment. As your concern is not marriage, hence you have been offered this treatment.
