Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a brain MRI done recently, and the result says that the right posterior communicating artery is diminutive but intact. Is this cause for concern? I previously had brain imaging done five years ago, and this was not noted.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

1) Starting the treatment with MRI findings alone (magnetic resonance imaging) is not a good idea. It is essential to know the symptoms and indications for a brain MRI before starting the treatment (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity).

2) However, to answer your queries, the variations in the size and course of blood vessels do not mean disease, and it is not a cause of concern. There are various collaterals or other vessel territories to take up the function.

3) The abnormal blood vessels show well-defined pathologies in the MRI. In your case, there is no need to worry about the present status of the posterior communicating artery.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

This MRI was done to rule out a stroke. I had continued numbness in one arm as my significant symptoms.

Does it concern if the left artery was not visualized on the MRI?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The reason for your persistent numbness cannot be explained as there is no infarct in the MRI. In any case, the sensory impairment of the arm that you have described does not have any association with the posterior communicating artery.

Take care.
