Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister's daughter, aged 14 years, was having double vision from past one week. After having an MRI, a neurologist looked at the scans and said she had multiple sclerosis (MS). He pointed out that she had many white spots (lesions) on the brain scan and also, she has inflammation of the brain. The doctor referred her to a philadelphia MS specialist. The waiting time is two weeks. Can her daughter take an over-the-counter drug for the inflammation while waiting to see the doctor? If so, which ones are best, and what would be the dosage? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There is no over-the-counter medication for inflammation in multiple sclerosis. You should know that high-dose steroids are the main therapy in these cases, and they are not over-the-counter medications. Anyway, there is no reason to panic as this is not a medical emergency, and it can wait for a couple of weeks. I would suggest taking a supplement of Alpha-lipoic acid 600 mg twice daily, and please check vitamin D plasma levels for possible deficiency. In such a case, I suggest vitamin D supplements would be helpful.

I hope this helps.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
