Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been on Nexplanon for about two years. I have not got a period but I had sex twice in the last six months. Each time I am getting my period after quite some time. Are these things connected?

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is a hormonal impact and the side effect of the drug is irregular, unplanned, and unscheduled bleeding or spotting. This can even gradually reduce menstrual cycles for a long time. It could be just a couple of incidents, but it is better to have a cervical smear and outpatient hysteroscopic examination done as it can reveal cervical erosion or other complications that could get stimulated with penetrative sex.

  1. It is better not to use a similar contraceptive for a long time as it can have side effects.
  2. Follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Collect results or findings of hysteroscopy and smear and discuss it with your local gynecologist.

I hope you are clear with my point and feel free to get back if you have any further queries.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
