How to manage norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My brother got sick last week. He has vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, and now doctors said it is norovirus. We first thought that it was food poisoning, but it is not going away. His fever keeps coming and going, and he is completely exhausted. We heard norovirus spreads fast, so now we are worried the whole family might get it. Is it anything like typhoid? We went on a trip a week ago, and he had some street food, so could it be related? He is 42 and generally healthy, but he is not improving much. He is not able to eat properly, just drinking ORS even though he throws up sometimes. What is the best way to recover from this? Should he get some antibiotics, or should he just wait and watch it out? Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am trying to keep the answer short. Norovirus is not typhoid or typhoid. It is viral and is self-limiting, which means you do not need antibiotics. It spreads through contaminated food and water. Hydration is the key. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is a very good option. I suggest avoiding dairy, spicy, or irritating food and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). However, the patient can take paracetamol for fever. Also, try to maintain strict hygiene to avoid the spreading of infection. If fever persists for more than five days, or if severe dehydration, blood in stool, or any unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
