Is herbal medicine effective for managing obesity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is obese, and she is thinking about taking herbal medicine for it. Is it safe to use herbal medicine for obesity? I have heard that abdominal obesity is harder to lose, especially when you have a lot of adipose tissue. Can medicine really help reduce this kind of fat, or is it better to stick with exercise? I want to know if herbal treatments are good or just a waste of time for weight loss.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

First, it is important to understand that the actual contents of many herbal products available in the market are often unknown. This uncertainty means there could be potential side effects with long-term use. It is crucial to be cautious when using such products, especially without knowing their complete composition.

The most effective way to reduce obesity is by creating a well-balanced diet plan in consultation with a nutritionist, alongside regular physical exercise. Additionally, weight loss occurs when your calorie intake is less than the number of calories your body burns daily. It is also advisable to get a thyroid function test, as hypothyroidism can sometimes contribute to weight gain.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
