Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex, and the next day I had the following symptoms: fatigue, nausea, and frequent urination. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is very common for people after unprotected exposure to develop the fear of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), and in turn, they start correlating many things to it. However, amongst all modes of exposure, oral sex has the most negligible risk for transmission of HIV. I would appreciate it if you could mention if it were homosexual or heterosexual, the number of days it has been since the exposure, if there were multiple previous contacts or exposures, and if you have had an HIV test before. In most cases of oral sex, the risk of HIV is nil, and there is no indication to start post-exposure prophylaxis. However, you will have to screen yourself for other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). You must get HBsAg, anti-HCV (hepatitis C virus), VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory test), and HIV by fourth generation combo test one month after the exposure.

I hope the information will help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

It was a girl.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Ok, the risk in heterosexual oral sex is nearly nil. It would help if you did not panic. Your symptoms could be due to other factors, such as stress and fear of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). However, it is because you get the abovementioned investigations done four weeks after exposure. You can watch for symptoms such as oral ulcers, any blisters around the lips, or any warty growths on the lips, as they could be signs of other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

I hope this information will help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I had sexual intercourse with her, and I used a condom. I felt a minor inflammation when I went to bed, and then the following day, I felt sick with mucus, suddenly fatigue, and nausea—all of a sudden felt a little bit of frequent urination.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As there was intercourse, although protected with a condom, it is better to get tested for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) at four weeks with a fourth-generation combo test. Your symptoms suggest possible viral infections such as flu or the common cold, which could still happen due to close contact. As the partner has a history of multiple contacts, always use a condom. There is no need to apologize; you can ask and clear all your doubts here. I can understand your anxiety and mental struggle. In the initial stage of seroconversion in the case of acquiring HIV, patients develop fever, enlarged lymph nodes, joint pains, and sometimes erythematous skin rash. This is usually seen four weeks after the exposure, and symptoms last for very short duration.

I hope the information will help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I apologize for all the questions. What symptoms should I look out for if I have AIDS or STDs? I will get tested in four weeks. How accurate are these tests?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There is no need to apologize, and you can ask and clear all your doubts here. I can understand your anxiety and mental struggle. In the initial stage of seroconversion in the case of acquiring HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), patients develop fever, enlarged lymph nodes, joint pains, and sometimes erythematous skin rash. This is usually seen at four weeks after the exposure, and symptoms last for a very short duration. Later on, as the immunity wanes, patients develop symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea, chronic cough, whitish tongue, itchy skin rashes, etc. Other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) symptoms you must watch out for include fluid-filled blisters over the genitalia, warty growths, urethral discharge, genital ulcers, etc. HIV fourth-generation combo test is considered to be conclusive after four weeks of last exposure.

I hope this information will help.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
