Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex and protected sexual intercourse with a female whose HIV status is unknown. I fingered her vagina and was unsure if I touched my genitals with the same hands. What is the risk of getting HIV infection in this case?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The chances of HIV transmission through unprotected oral sex or accidental touching of fingers wet with vaginal fluids are very low. Therefore no need to get tensed, but get tested for HIV after 45 days of exposure using a 4th generation test kit. Meanwhile, within three weeks of exposure, consult an STD (sexually transmitted disease) specialist in person and get tests for other STDs because oral sex can transmit other STDs like herpes and syphilis if the female partner has them.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I consulted a doctor the next day after exposure, and he adviced me to take PEP, which I took for one month. So it has been close to 6 to 7 weeks of exposure and about two weeks after completion of PEP. Will it help in reducing the risk of HIV infection? When can I take the test, and which test should I take?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your chances of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection are very low. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an excellent preventive treatment for HIV after possible exposure. So you can assure that you are free from HIV. Get a 4th generation HIV test done for confirmation.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
