Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had braces years ago. I decided to remove my permanent retainers, but I changed my mind and put them back after a week. Thus one tooth has shifted, and it hurts now. Does it hurt because the permanent retainer is pushing it back into place? Kindly reply.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Permanent retainers are fixed on the back side of your teeth (facing the palate and tongue side of upper and lower teeth, respectively) with composite and are not supposed to be removed. How did you remove it yourself and then put it back on? Is it the permanent retainers wire you are talking about or the removable retainers? As you mentioned, one particular tooth has shifted in a week's duration, and retainers were according to the positions where your Orthodontic treatment was finished. So yes, there will be forces on this particular shifted tooth as well to go to the corrected positions. This could be a possibility. But to give you a more precise answer, I would like to look at the exact situation. Do share the photos of the particular tooth that has shifted and of the retainers as well. I would examine the photos, enabling me to know better how to deal with the exact issue. Please follow up with the pictures and any other queries or clarifications. Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is relapse of the tooth due to broken permanent retainer causing pain in the tooth.

Regarding follow up

Share the photos of the particular tooth, the entire dentition, and permanent retainers.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
