Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a molar band on my back tooth. The cleat has scratched my tongue. I went to the orthodontist and the assistant told me that it is normal to have it. But the metal is sharp and I cannot even talk with it. Please help me. What can I do at home to bend the cleat inside my mouth?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the query and the attached image (attachment removed to protect patient identity). The image seems to be hazy. As per my understanding, an archwire is placed inside the inner side of your teeth. The arm of the molar band facing towards the cheek impinges the cheek muscle and causes irritation. Actually, a molar band should not have an arm on the outside when the wire is inside. The dentist should place wax to cover the sharp edge or the doctor should have to grind it smooth. You can try to apply Lignocaine gel over the cheek to avoid ulceration. Then you need to consult the orthodontist again and resolve the problem.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
